Cobh

As Cobh is a maritime town it has a long history with the sea. Cobh is world famous for being the last port of call of the ill fated Titanic. There is now a ‘Titanic Trail’ in the town which is a walking tour showing places of interest about the ship and other aspects of the history of Cobh. Another ship with links to Cobh is the Lusitania. After being sunk during World War One the survivors and those drowned were brought ashore here. The first Yacht Club in the world was built in the town. The building is now used as an art centre – The Sirius Art Centre named after the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Jack Doyle, the famous boxer/actor was from here and of course everyone knows the Cobh is the birthplace of Sonia O Sullivan, the first woman to win an Olympic medal for Ireland.
